Campbell's and Kellogg's

Campbell Soup Company

Campbell Soup Company is the world's largest maker of soups with more than 500 varieties sold in 122 countries. In the United States, their red and white labeled cans of condensed soups are found in more than two-thirds of all American homes. Over the years, Campbell's "Mmm, mmm, good," marketing campaign portrayed these soups as the perfect food for growing children. But Campbells soups as well as their other products may not be as "wholesome" as they would like them to appear.

According to letters received from the company, Campbell's products "Campbell's use of genetically modified ingredients is small restricted primarily to part of its supply products derived from corn and soybeans." But a typical consumer in the United States would never know this, because Campbells refuses to label products that contain genetically engineered ingredients. Campbell's policies in Europe, however, are another story. There, in response to consumer concerns, the company is moving towards using only non-genetically engineered ingredients in all of their products.

Campbell's is much more than just soup. The company markets a variety of products including Prego spaghetti sauce, Franco-American pastas and gravies, Pace Mexican foods, Swanson broths, V8 and V8 Splash, Pepperidge Farm and Godiva chocolates. Any of these products may contain genetically engineered ingredients made from corn, soy or canola.

For example, take Campbell's tomato soup, one of their top selling varieties that contains high fructose corn syrup. Since approx 33% of the U.S. corn crop was genetically engineered in 1999, there's some likelihood that the corn syrup found in your tomato soup was made from this same corn.

In addition to using genetically engineered ingredients in their products, Campbells has also been involved in developing their own genetically engineered crops. During the 1990s, Campbells received 13 permits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to field test genetically engineered tomatoes

Kellogg Company

The Kellogg Company makes almost one third of all ready-to-eat cereals sold in the United States and seven of the top 10 cereals in the world including Frosted Flakes, Corn Flakes, Two Scoops Raisin Bran, Froot Loops, Rice Krispies and Special K. The company also produces frozen waffles (Eggo), cereal bars (Nutri-Grain), pastries (Pop-Tarts), snacks (Rice Krispies Treats) and "meat alternatives" (Morningstar Farms).

According to their Web site, Kellogg Company remains committed to bringing "the best to you each morning" and throughout the day. But when it comes to many of their products, this means genetically engineered ingredients -- from the corn in Frosted Flakes to the soy in their Morningstar Farms Garden Veggie Patties.

Like many other U.S. food companies, however, Kelloggs has a different policy when it comes to products for European consumers. In Europe, Kelloggs has stated publicly that it is taking actions to remove all genetically engineered ingredients from their cereals and other products.
